Reca un’iscrizione in capitali dorate che forma un ovale intorno alla figura dell’effigiato: «IO. FRANC: ALBANUS. CO. ET EQ. PRAEFECTUS AULAE IN REGIONE BERGOMATE ELISABETH CHRISTINAE BRANSUICCENSIS, CAROLI III. HISPANIAE REGIS SPONSAE QUAE, IN ARCE SUA URGNANI PRANDENS DIE 30 MAI 1708 EUM REGALI MUNERE CONDECORAVIT AETA AN. 45».&lt;br /&gt;
Il dipinto, in ottimo stato di conservazione, proviene dalla quadreria di Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli.&lt;br /&gt;
Ricordato dal Tassi, che lo giudicava «non inferiore al Vitellio», nel gruppo di opere dipinte tra il ritorno a Bergamo e la frequentazione milanese dello studio dell’Adler, il ritratto deve essere anticipato rispetto alla datazione tradizionale al 1715 (Caversazzi, Mazzini, Russoli). Anche ammettendo che l’iscrizione sia posteriore al dipinto, essa deve infatti cadere tra il 1708, anno in cui Elisabetta Cristina di Brunswick, promessa sposa di Carlo d’Asburgo proclamatosi re di Spagna col titolo di Carlo in, soggiorna in Italia, entrando solennemente in Milano l’11 giugno (Salmon, «Lo stato presente di tutti i paesi e popoli del mondo» Venezia 1751, XIX, p. 23), e il 1711, quando Carlo diviene imperatore del Sacro Romano Impero col nome di Carlo VI. L’estrema finitezza della stesura pittorica concorda d’altra parte con una datazione precoce. Esposto a Bordeaux nel 1956 (n. 9).&lt;br /&gt;
